WASHINGTON (May 26, 2022) --Today, the world’s largest tire companies, via the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA), thanked the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) for reaffirming its commitment to helping promote vehicle tire safety as a core public welfare priority. As it has for the past three years, the NLGA underscored its support of the USTMA’s annual National Tire Safety Week initiative by issuing a resolution urging American motorists to include regular tire inspections as an integral element of their household routines.

Noting that U.S. motorists traveled more than 3.2 trillion miles on tires in the past year, with nearly 35 million expected to travel by car this Memorial Day weekend, the NLGA is emphasizing the importance of checking tire pressure monthly and ensuring that vehicle tires are rotated and properly aligned. The resolution also highlights the necessity of assessing tire tread depth, given that excessively worn tires are more susceptible to punctures and hydroplaning in wet conditions.

“Tires are the only part of a vehicle that touches the road and are subject to intense wear. Given how essential safe transportation is to our livelihoods, routine attention to tire integrity is a critical safety necessity,” noted USTMA President and CEO Anne Forristall Luke. She added, “USTMA is grateful, as always, for NLGA’s partnership on this important issue.”

Resolution sponsors include: Lt. Governor Pamela Evette (R – South Carolina), Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist (D – Michigan), Lt. Governor Adam Gregg (R – Iowa), Lt. Governor Bethany Hall-Long (D – Delaware), Lt. Governor Jon Husted (R – Ohio), Lt. Governor Randy McNally (R – Tennessee), Lt. Governor Kevin Meyer (R – Alaska), Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser (R – Louisiana), Lt. Governor Josh Tenorio (D – Guam)

National Tire Safety Week is held each year during the week before the July 4th holiday to highlight summer travel safety. This year, NTSW will be held June 27-July 3, 2022, to help consumers and fleets learn simple yet essential steps for proper tire care and maintenance.
