USTMA's Statement on the NHTSA's Negotiated Rulemaking to Modernize Federal Tire Testing Standards

October 26, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 26, 2026-- Anne Forristall Luke, president and CEO of the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, issued the following statement on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) announcement of a negotiated rulemaking to modernize federal tire testing standards

“Modern standards make for safer roads. USTMA applauds Administrator Morrison for taking on work the tire industry has urged for years: bringing federal tire standards in line with the tires Americans drive on today. Outdated tire testing standards designed for the tires of the 1960s tell us nothing about whether today’s tires are safe. In fact, those outdated standards prevent American drivers from accessing the latest technology currently available in much of the rest of the world. Bringing our standards into line with modern tire technology will ensure Americans have access to the highest performing tires made today. USTMA’s members look forward to contributing their engineering expertise to the process.”
